British Columbia is investing $1.5 million in 12 local technology companies through the BC Fast Pilot program, a joint initiative by Innovate BC and the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).
The funding will support pilot projects in areas such as wildfire management, critical minerals, water treatment, artificial intelligence, clean technology, and agriculture.
“Through BC Fast, local companies have the opportunity to show what they are capable of by creating new technology solutions to the challenges we’re facing,” said Diana Gibson, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “I look forward to watching these companies grow and increase global awareness of the talent in B.C.’s tech ecosystem.”
Now in its sixth round, the BC Fast Pilot program helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) test new technologies in real-world conditions. The goal is to validate solutions, encourage customer adoption, and drive economic growth in key sectors. Since its launch in 2019, the program has invested $11.4 million in 87 pilot projects.
“This year’s recipients are addressing critical areas such as emission reduction, wildfire management, and health sciences,” said Peter Cowan, President and CEO of Innovate BC. “These projects highlight the impact of innovation in creating a more prosperous, future-ready British Columbia.”
Among the funded projects, UVX Inc. is piloting a ceiling-mounted device that inactivates airborne pathogens while reducing HVAC energy consumption. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate how UVX’s technology is a cheaper, silent, and sustainable alternative for air sanitization,” said Kunal Sethi, CEO of UVX Inc.
Edison Motors is testing a hybrid-electric snowplow designed to cut carbon emissions in roadway maintenance. “This grant marks a pivotal moment in our journey to revolutionize the heavy truck industry,” said Eric Little, Founder and CTO of Edison Motors. “We’re setting a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in snow removal technology.”
The BC Fast Pilot program continues to support innovation, helping B.C.-based companies scale solutions that address local and global challenges.
