Coding bootcamp Lighthouse Labs has announced the launch of their new self-identifying scholarship model.
The scholarship model exists to support diversity and representation in the Canadian tech community. Each scholarship provides one student with $2,000 towards their bootcamp tuition so that recipients can get a career-changing education in web development.
Up to five scholarships are available to be awarded each month to applicants from all of Lighthouse Labs’ locations across the country—Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Victoria and Ottawa.
Acknowledging that identity is complex and not easily defined, the scholarship model is based on self-identification. Applications are open to any potential student who self-identifies with some experience of underrepresentation in the tech industry, who wishes to make a difference and pave the way for others to engineer cultural change.
Through these scholarships, Lighthouse Labs hopes to lower barriers, provide greater access to coding education for underrepresented groups in technology, and alter perceptions of what it means to be a developer.
