Techcouver has learned that Ottawa-born, e-commerce darling Shopify is expanding in Vancouver and taking over 90,000 square feet at 1055 Dunsmuir Street.
Shopify’s new space will accommodate 500-700 employees over five floors.
The space was previously occupied by Deloitte Canada who moved out late last year and is in the middle of a two-stage move to 400 West Georgia, the Westbank-developed, futuristic tower that Apple will call home later this year.
Deloitte is temporarily the sole tenant of Spaces’ new co-working space within the old Tom Lee Music building at 919 Granville Street.
Shopify currently has Canadian offices in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Waterloo, and Vancouver, however, their Vancouver office is in WeWork’s coworking office at Bentall III on Burrard Street.
According to LinkedIn, Shopify currently has 150 employees in Vancouver but the progressive company is known for its flexible working arrangements, allowing many to work from home.
Last month the company announced that over one million merchants on Shopify set records on the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend with merchants across more than 175 countries selling $2.9+ billion, up from last year’s $1.8+ billion.
UPDATE: Shopify has confirmed Techcouver’s reporting and said that it plans to hire 1,000 people in Vancouver, expanding its team with a slew of backend developers, data engineers, mobile developers, web developers, product designers and product managers. Shopify’s new office will be led by Lynsey Thornton, vice president of UX, who was Shopify’s first employee in Vancouver. Thornton has been with the company since 2013 and started out as a UX research lead.
