Kelowna’s Two Hat has been acquired by Microsoft for an undisclosed amount.
Two Hat’s intelligent content moderation platform and profanity filter help online communities scale and automate the moderation of all user-generated content.
The two companies have worked together in the past to moderate content on Minecraft and within the Xbox community.
Two Hat was founded in 2012 by Chris Priebe, who was inspired to action by the story of Amanda Todd to create healthy, inclusive, and safe digital spaces for kids.
“We have partnered with Xbox and the Microsoft team for several years and share the passion and drive to make meaningful change in the advancement of online civility and citizenship,” Priebe wrote regarding the acquisition.
“We are committed to ensuring safety, inclusion and online health & wellness are always at the forefront of our work and through joining Microsoft, we can provide the greatest concentration of talent, resources and insight necessary to further this vision.”
Unlike other big tech acquisitions where all other customers are slowly cut off, Microsoft understands the importance of not doing that in the case of Two Hat’s existing customer base.
“We also recognize the trust Two Hat has built with customers who depend on its services and those relationships will continue as part of the transition,” wrote Microsoft’s Dave McCarthy as part of Microsoft’s announcement.
