If you’ve been working in the Vancouver tech ecosystem over the past 5-10 years, you’ve likely connected with Matt Carlson.
Matt is the most tech-savvy commercial real estate professional in Vancouver.
But that really shouldn’t come as a surprise. I met Matt in 2006 when he enthusiastically pitched me to cover his tech startup on Techvibes (#RIP x 2) and we’ve worked together sporadically since.
Readers may remember Matt’s Thought Leadership contributions on remote work and the hybridized workplace.
Carlson announced yesterday that he is leaving Colliers after more than 12 years of service. In typical LinkedIn fashion, he recounted a career full of milestones including being the youngest person to receive the title of Executive Vice President and being recognized as the top broker in Canada in 2020.
But why leave Colliers when you’ve got a career on the fast track?
Turns out he isn’t leaving the industry at all.
Today marks day one for his new venture, Floorspace – a digital-first commercial real estate brokerage.
Co-founded with his partner Lindsay Carlson, Floorspace plans to shape the future of commercial real estate by connecting clients with technology in a new way. They’re joined by Christopher O’Neill and Robin Macdonald from Colliers, along with Willow King from Corbel Commercial and a number of others on their growing team.
Overall the traditional commercial real estate industry has been a slow adopter of digitization and have been content to tell their clients that they are paperless.
Floorspace is keen to change that pace and as they exit stealth mode, I have no doubt that their business strategy will have something innovative at the heart of it.
