Mozilla announced today that it has acquired Vancouver’s Active Replica.
Active Replica creates virtual spaces and events that allow for true to life communication through conversation, movement, activities and entertainment.
The news comes just as Mozilla Hubs launched first public beta of its new subscription service earlier this week, which allows users to create and launch new, more customizable Hubs.
Bringing Active Replica into Mozilla will help Hubs accelerate the launch of more personalized subscription tiers, improve the Hubs onboarding experience, and introduce new interaction capabilities in the Hubs engine.
Active Replica was founded by Jacob Ervin and Valerian Denis in 2020.
“From the very first day, we’ve believed that the web-based metaverse will be the cornerstone of how people connect virtually. Working with social, cultural, and educational organizations has given us the opportunity to see how important the open web is to the future of remote communication,” wrote Ervin and Denis regarding the acquisition.
They continued, “Mozilla has long advocated for a healthier internet and has been an inspiration to us in its dedication and contributions to the open web. By joining forces with the Mozilla Hubs team, we’re able to further expand on our mission and inspire a new generation of creators, connectors, and builders”.
Last summer Active Replica hosted BC’s first Metaverse job fair on their proprietary, web-based ecosystem called Constellation. Through Constellation, companies are able to link their virtual spaces to form a single explorable network, making it easier for users to discover and engage with different organizations.
The Active Replica team will join the Mozilla Hubs team to help create user-friendly experiences that help organizations use virtual spaces to drive impact.
