Semiconductor Startup Bonsai Secures the Seed It Needs to Grow

May 12, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

A fabless semiconductor startup developing critical infrastructure technology for next-generation wireless networks (such as 5G) announced this week a round of seed funding.

The early financing round for Vancouver-based Bonsai Micro was led by Vanedge Capital with participation from BDC Capital’s Deep Tech Venture Fund.

The capital will be applied toward commercializing the startup’s products, according to cofounder Bernard Guay.

“We are excited to partner with Vanedge Capital and BDC Capital’s Deep Tech Venture Fund to accelerate the adoption of next-generation wireless networks by addressing a critical challenge: energy efficiency,” stated Guay of Bonsai Micro.

“These funds are key to the commercialization of our products,” he said.

Vanedge believes Bonsai’s technology has “the potential to revolutionize the wireless industry.”

“We are excited to invest in Bonsai Micro and its highly experienced team,” stated Moe Kermani, Managing Partner at Vanedge Capital.

“With the ongoing deployment of new 5G networks and the imperative need for domestic semiconductor technology in North America, especially for 5G, the opportunity is massive,” he said.

“Bonsai Micro’s technology is a critical enabler to the viability of next-generation wireless communications such as 5G,” agreed Charles Lespérance, Partner, Deep Tech Venture Fund at BDC Capital. “We’ve been incredibly impressed by the company’s robust and experienced management team and are pleased to invest alongside Vanedge Capital to help grow a new Canadian leader in the semiconductor industry.”

Bonsai was founded in Vancouver by a team of semiconductor veterans with a track record of delivering innovative products at PMC-Sierra (now Microchip Technology), a BC-based success story in the semiconductor industry.

The team has developed a groundbreaking technology that will make the wireless devices of the future weigh less, last longer on a charge, and stream data faster than ever, according to a statement from Bonsai.

“Our innovative approach and unique combination of design techniques will disrupt the industry by delivering unprecedented performance and energy efficiency to wireless users and operators,” said Guay, who serves as chief executive.

Bonsai combines “cutting-edge Radio Frequency, Mixed Signal, and Machine Learning design techniques” to deliver its signature disruptive performance and energy efficiency.

Terms of the seed financing round were not disclosed.
