TransLink announced this week that all RapidBus routes now feature free wifi.
In collaboration with Rogers Communications, free wifi on TransLink’s express RapidBus services is part of the BC transit corporation’s Customer Experience Action Plan, which aims to improve the commuting experience for passengers in Metro Vancouver.
Wifi service is currently available for free on all RapidBus routes, selected articulated buses, most SeaBus vessels, and some SkyTrain cars. Key transit hubs including SeaBus terminals, Edmonds Station, New Westminster Station, Carvolth Exchange, and Langley Centre Exchange also offer free Internet.
TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn believes that the service upgrade is an important step towards enhancing customer experience, allowing passengers to use their transit time for leisure, work, or socializing without incurring any data fees.
“Not only is RapidBus faster with fewer stops, now all customers can ride our premium bus service without having to spend money on data fees,” he said. “These upgrades are yet another way we are elevating customer experiences by making it easier for customers to use their transit time for leisure, work, or to connect with family and friends.”
TransLink and Rogers Communications are continuing work to install public wifi across the entire transit system, with a focus on vehicles that carry the most passengers.
The WiFi initiative was originally conceived in partnership with Shaw Communications, which has since merged with Rogers.
Since the installation of WiFi on TransLink’s system in late 2021, approximately 24,000 unique devices connect to TransLink WiFi each day. To date, customers have used over 215,000 gigabytes of free data while onboard transit vehicles or at transit hubs, equivalent to streaming over 71,000 hours of Netflix in High Definition.
