Book entertainment company Legible has teamed up with Kartoon Studios, holder of the Stan Lee Universe, to breathe new life into previously unseen characters created by the legendary Lee.
The partnership grants Vancouver’s Legible exclusive global rights to develop and publish a selection of new characters and narratives conceived by the comic book icon.
“Our team can’t wait to bring these new worlds, fantastic characters, powerful stories, and visionary themes to Stan Lee’s fans and to a global audience as never before in digital and print,” Kaleeg Hainsworth, CEO of Legible, stated.
As part of the agreement, Legible is set to create and distribute 12 original comic book series, capitalizing on its unique ability to produce digital, print, and “living book” versions of Kartoon’s intellectual properties. These books incorporate audio, video, and animations, further enhancing the reading experience for fans of the late Lee.
“We know that this is only the beginning for these properties and the brands to which they will give rise,” said Hainsworth.
Stan Lee, a seminal figure in the comic book world, is known for his creation of iconic superheroes including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, and many more.
He served as Marvel’s editor-in-chief and later as its editorial director and publisher. In addition to his comic book contributions, Stan is also remembered for his cameos in numerous Marvel films and TV projects.
“We are celebrating Stan Lee’s 100th birthday this year,” stated Kartoon executive Jon Ollwerther, “and what better way to honour this true legend than to launch Stan Lee Comics, with a logo that Stan had created himself, and bring his never-before-seen creations to life through this series of new digital and print comic books.”
A unique editorial page, “Yakkin’ with Stan,” will highlight each comic.
“Not unlike Stan’s Soapbox, which graced every Marvel Comic, Yakkin’ with Stan will speak to all the ‘True Believers’,” explains Ollwerther.
Legible’s e-bookstore currently streams over two million eBooks.
“The platform brings publishing and reading into the twenty-first century, and there is just no better way to do so than with Stan Lee, who was always ahead of his time,” Hainsworth said.
Legible also recently signed an exclusive deal with LiveOne, an infotainment company that streams music and podcasts to Tesla vehicles, among other brands.
