While all of Silicon Valley is talking about Sam Altman’s ouster from OpenAI and subsequent hire by Microsoft, Vancouver’s tech community is undergoing a little drama as well.
Techcouver has learned that Vancouver Tech Journal founder William Johnson will be leaving the Overstory Media Group publication at the end of November. Although William has not responded to our inquiries by email to confirm this news, we have confirmed it with multiple sources.
Johnson began the Vancouver Tech Journal newsletter in 2018 as a side hustle while managing marketing and communications for Innovate BC and took it full time when acquired by Victoria’s Overstory in 2020.
Overstory made a splash in Canada’s online media landscape in 2021 with ambitious plans to launch 50 community brands by 2023 and add 250 journalists to its roster.
Run by Daily Hive’s former Editor-in-Chief Farhan Mohamed and backed by Victoria tech entrepreneur Andrew Wilkinson, Overstory’s growth plans have stalled and they’ve had their share of speed bumps along the way including layoffs and threats of unionization.
According to their website and LinkedIn, Overstory is responsible for 14 brands and has under 50 employees at the time of writing.
But no need to worry about where to get your Vancouver tech news moving forward.
Techcouver provides real-time reporting and analysis of emerging technology news and has a growing weekly free newsletter. Award-winning journalist Kate Wilson continues at the helm of the Vancouver Tech Journal (and is hiring a staff writer).
