When Clio launched in 2008 at ABA TECHSHOW, no one could have predicted its significant impact on the legal industry.
The company has since grown into a global force in legal technology, with over 150,000 customers in more than 100 countries.
In 2021, Clio acquired San Francisco’s Lawyaw, a developer of innovative digital workflows for legal documents founded in 2016.
This year, Lawyaw is being rebranded within the Vancouver legal-tech’s umbrella.
Moving forward, Lawyaw will now operate under the Clio brand as Clio Draft, the BC firm announced this week.
“Uniting under the Clio banner gives us a clear focus on delivering value to our customers,” explains Jack Newton, the founder of Clio.
“It also sets us up to enhance the future capabilities of legal document innovation by consolidating and centralizing our efforts,” the chief executive officer added.
With deepened integration of products and services since the acquisition, Clio is “taking a further step towards its vision to revolutionize legal document workflows.”
Since the acquisition, Lawyaw’s tech has already drafted more than seven million legal documents.
“We will continue to invest in and grow our services in document automation as an essential component of our multi-product platform,” Newton stated.
Now Clio Draft, the tech delivers automation of complex legal documents, collaborative team editing features, and integration with other Clio products as well as third-party apps.
Newton says it’s more than just a rebrand though—it’s also an upgrade.
“As we introduce Clio Draft to the market, we are going beyond a rebrand,” he says. “We are evolving the capabilities of our platform to better serve the needs of legal professionals.”
In 2022, Clio announced centaur status—a title reserved for private SaaS companies with more than US$100 million in annual recurring revenue.
The next year, the company celebrated its 15th anniversary amid expansion into new markets.
But that is all relatively small-picture stuff for Newton, who intends for Clio to endure beyond a century.
“There’s so much potential ahead of us in the document innovation space,” says Newton, “and Clio Draft marks an important next chapter in this journey.”
