Industrial assets comprise a critical part of what makes modern living possible.
A North Vancouver-based upstart is aiming to modernize “the way industrial asset integrity is evaluated and visualized by creating highly differentiated imaging technologies.”
DarkVision posits that, as societal standards for reliability and safety continue to rise, engineers and asset owners need higher fidelity data to identify failure mechanisms sooner and to improve the performance of critical equipment.
“DarkVision is disrupting the world of industrial asset inspection,” reads a statement from the firm’s website. “We are revolutionizing the way the industry evaluates and understands critical infrastructure by creating the world’s highest fidelity and highest resolution inspection technology.”
The B.C. firm deploys a tech stack consisting of cloud-based machine vision, artificial intelligence, and software algorithms to process vast quantities of raw acoustic data into high-resolution point clouds of usable information.
Rendering software and proprietary analysis engines “reveal detail in submillmetric resolution,” according to DarkVision, while detection algorithms identify volumetric defects in surface textures as small as 0.01 inches. Deformation, corrosion, erosion, and other concerns assets are thus precisely identified and quantified.
The latest chipsets and embedded architectures are leveraged to render such massive datasets, with field data processed at rates up to 614 gigabytes per second, the company says. So far, DarkVision has captured more than 10,000 terabytes of data.
DarkVision was founded in 2013 by chief executive officer Stephen Robinson alongside fellow UBC graduate Graham Sanders, who serves as chief of tech, and chartered mechanical engineer Osman Malik, who functions as chief of finance.
This year, DarkVision is a finalist in the 2024 Technology Impact Awards. The company is competing in the “Gamechanger – Ambition” category.
