Intuitive AI’s Oscar Platform to Power Recycling Program for Portland Blazers

October 21, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

It is arguably more confusing than ever for consumers to know how to sort their trash properly.

Intuitive AI was founded in Vancouver in 2019 by Murad and Vivek Vyas with the goal to tackle the global waste crisis.

By clarifying how the trash should be sorted before the object is thrown away, Intuitive AI eliminates the guesswork.

Now, the upstart is slated to power recycling for the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center in Oregon.

The Blazers this week announced the rollout of Intuitive AI’s Oscar Sort, an AI Recycling Assistant, throughout Moda Center concourses.

This B.C.-born technology diverts waste from landfills by guiding fans to make correct sorting decisions.

Using AI, Oscar Sort recognizes compostable, recyclable, and reusable items, helping fans to dispose of them correctly.

“We’re thrilled to be rolling out Oscar Sort technology to Moda Center to help enhance the fan experience,” said Jackie Ventura, Vice President of Facility Operations for the Portland Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter.

Oscar’s integration builds on Moda Center’s Rip City Reuse program, which replaces 500,000 single-use cups annually with reusable cups.

“Intuitive AI’s unique technology will help us increase our recycling, composting, and reuse eorts throughout the arena while engaging fans in fun, exciting, and educational AI-powered experiences,” stated Ventura.

Each Oscar unit operates with the energy efficiency of a small computer and offsets the CO2 equivalent of 10 cars annually.

“Usually sustainability-centric solutions are viewed as an expense, but Oscar is flipping the script by helping the top and bottom line,” said Hassan Murad, cofounder and chief executive of Intuitive AI.

“By reducing operational costs, generating new revenue streams, and offering a platform for sustainable sponsorships, Oscar is transforming how arenas operate,” Murad continued.

In addition to enhancing fan engagement, Oscar Sort provides Rose Quarter management with critical data to optimize sustainability and operations. This includes information on bin capacity, which reduces the need for staff to manually check bins or change partially filled bags, saving resources.

Intuitive AI works with major brands including The Coca-Cola Company, Meta, PepsiCo, Amazon, and major airports, universities, and malls. Last year, the company unveiled Oscar Pocket.

The Portland Trail Blazers, with 37 playoff appearances and one championship, were founded as members of the National Basketball Association in 1970.
