Burnaby’s Hedgehog Technologies has been honored with two prestigious awards at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards for their work with the Haida Nation on a 2 MW Solar Array and Microgrid project.
The engineering firm received both the Canadian Consulting Engineer Award of Excellence and the Building a Better Canada Award. These awards recognize Hedgehog’s collaboration with the Haida Nation on an ambitious solar and microgrid project in Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off British Columbia’s coast, which is home to the Haida Nation.
Hedgehog partnered with the Haida Nation to construct a 2 MW solar array and a microgrid controller along the Masset airport runway. To manage this project, the Haida Nation established Tll Yahda Energy, a unique collaboration between Old Massett Village Council, Skidegate Band Council, and the Council of Haida Nation. Through training, mentorship, and job creation, local community members played a crucial role in bringing the project to life.
Despite technical challenges, the Haida Nation’s commitment drove the project forward, generating jobs, enhancing local expertise, and advancing energy independence for future projects.
“This recognition reflects not only the technical complexity of the project but also the Haida Nation’s dedication and vision,” said Dr. Michael Wrinch, CEO of Hedgehog Technologies. “This solar array and microgrid are more than renewable energy solutions; they symbolize steps toward energy sovereignty, job creation, and local empowerment.”
