B.C. Receives ‘A’ on 2018 Technology Report Card

January 1, 2019 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

For the first time ever British Columbia’s tech sector has earned an A grade when compared with other provinces.

The BC Tech Association and KPMG have released the 2018 instalment of the BC Technology Report Card, a comprehensive analysis that compares the BC tech sector against other sectors in the province and against tech sectors in other provinces.

The last time the report card was issued, in 2016, B.C. received a B grade.

The 2018 report card highlighted employment growth of 24% since 2006 and tech sector revenue growth at a compound 7.3% every year from 2011-16.

The report card noted a persistent talent gap — most notably at the master’s and PhD levels. Meanwhile, innovation as judged by R&D and intellectual property has experienced minimal growth.

Also notable, B.C.’s tech sector remains weighted towards small companies. Of the more than 10,000 tech companies in the province, 8,222 of them have fewer than 10 employees.

About 450 companies have more than 50 workers.

Check out the complete report here.
