A remote Indigenous community called the Fort Severn First Nation (FSFN) in Northern Ontario has completed a milestone energy project which is receiving national recognition.
Burnaby-based electromechanical engineering firm Hedgehog Technologies has received an Award of Excellence and an additional special award called Engineering a Better Canada for their work on the project. The awards mark an important step towards Indigenous energy sovereignty.
As protectors of the declining polar bear population in Northern Ontario, The FSFN have a vision for renewable energy to power the community and reduce their dependency on fossil fuel generation.
The FSFN completed a 300-kW solar array to offset the remote community’s energy demand.
Hedgehog Technologies led the project management, engineering, and coordination of logistics. In collaboration with Chief Paul Burke, community training programs were developed to support Fort Severn in maintaining the project after completion.
The Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards are given to projects that demonstrate a high quality of engineering, imagination and innovation. Held annually since 1969, the awards are the most prestigious mark of recognition for consulting engineers in Canada.
Last month Hedgehog Technologies announced the launch of an innovative system called the Nimba Microgrid Controller Solution to intelligently manage and optimize microgrid-powered communities.
