Vancouver-based Kabam Games has laid off about three dozen employees, according to a new report.
At the start of the year, Kabam boasted more than 500 employees, including over 300 in the Vancouver region alone. These figures may run slightly smaller for now, however.
“We made the decision to adjust our resourcing structure in alignment with our goals,” a Kabam spokesperson informed TechCrunch. “This means that while we will continue to hire in key areas in the year ahead, unfortunately, we are reducing our workforce by approximately 7%.”
Kabam was earlier this year named one of BC’s Top Employers was by Mediacorp, organizers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.
Alongside tech titans such as Clio, Amazon, and Telus, Kabam was recognized for its flexible benefits plan, tuition subsidies, and financial incentives such as profit-sharing. The studio’s beautiful office space probably helps too.
Since 2006, the studio has developed several dozen mobile titles, with a focus on massively multiplayer social games. Titles worth mentioning include “Transformers: Forged to Fight”—that explains something—and “Marvel Contest of Champions,” each of which have been downloaded from app stores tens of millions of times.
The company has partnered with several big time brands on collaborative projects, such as Disney.
Kabam is one of several Vancouver tech firms to be hit with layoffs this year. Others include Dapper Labs, Hootsuite, and Thinkific.
