A producer and singer-songwriter by the name of “WHIPPED CREAM” has unleashed what the Vancouver Island artist believes to be her most ambitious project to date.
The Toronto-born, BC-based musician paired with rapper Jasiah, as well as Vancouver producer Crimson Child, to concoct an “operatic electronic single.”
A genre-bending collaboration, “The Dark” was released via Ontario-born Monstercat, a tech-forward independent record label in 2011.
Last year, for example, the label launched launched its own NFT platform, Relics.
The new song, which unravels a story of love and loss, features an immersive music video produced by Vancouver-based studio Departure Lounge, a BC startup advancing the metaverse in Canada.
According to Departure Lounge, “The Dark” music video is a novel mixed-reality project developed in Canada’s first volumetric capture facility.
Equipped with tech, Whipped Cream, Jasiah, and Crimson Child were shot by 100 cameras at Metastage Canada, capturing them in real-time and transporting their holograms into a virtual reality environment, the company says.
As a result, they created “the world’s highest-resolution volumetric VR music experience to date, revolutionizing the future of audiovisual content,” according to a statement.
“The vision and artistry that [Whipped Cream] has brought to this project has been amazing,” noted Adam Rogers, cofounder of Departure Lounge.
A clip of the video first premiered at Vancouver International Film Festival in October. While the song is out now, the full music video will go public on February 1.
The experience will also hit SXSW in Austin in March, where attendees can explore “The Dark” through an XR headset.
From haunting keys and textured synth work, the track ushers in Whipped Cream’s forthcoming EP.
“It’s learning to finally let go of what might be so beautiful yet painful and unhealthy, and head into the unknown, ‘the dark,'” she notes of the song’s theme.
The artist has prior received praise for her infusion of immersive technology into her musical works, including her visually entrancing Coachella set, which was remotely performed from Vancouver Island.
Founded in June 2021, Departure Lounge provides tools, technologies, and creative services to thrive in Web 3.0 and the Metaverse through a 6,000 square foot studio located at the Center for Digital Media on Great Northern Way.
