Energy Plug Technologies this week celebrated the signing of its first battery contract with a local mining company operating a mine in the Kootenays.
Energy Plug, a technology company providing customized Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery packs for residential, commercial, and industrial applications, will install a 20kWh battery energy storage system for Vancouver’s Ximen Mining to minimize blackouts and brownouts at a historic site.
“Energy Plug is committed to helping organizations of all sizes tap into battery storage technologies to support climate objectives and reduce energy costs,” said Broderick Gunning, who serves as chief executive officer.
Ximen is currently restarting up the Kenville Gold Mine near Nelson. In 2019, the company acquired 100% of the former producing crown granted mineral claims and the surface rights along with all existing permits, infrastructure, and equipment.
“When we looked to expand our clean energy program to support Kenville Gold Mine operations, Energy Plug was a natural fit,” said Christopher Anderson, CEO of Ximen.
The second phase of Energy Plug’s program includes the installation of a 100kWh system at Kenville Mine. This system will be designed to accommodate higher power consumption equipment including compressors and ventilation systems.
Once installed, Energy Plug’s upgraded BESS will allow Ximen to store energy during off-peak hours and supply it back during peak load periods, increasing the energy efficiency of the mine site, and reducing strain on the site’s grid, according to a statement from the firm.
“We’re pleased to be working alongside Ximen to deliver a clean energy program that will support its critical infrastructure and balance its energy supply with renewable energy sources, validating the important role of BESS for sustainable energy,” Gunning said.
“Energy Plug’s technology will integrate seamlessly within our existing infrastructure, providing critical support for our energy system and enabling us to make significant progress toward our net zero objectives,” believes Anderson.
Phase one installations are expected to be completed throughout the summer, while phase two is anticipated to launch by the end of the year.
Energy Plug, which recently bolstered its board of directors, is collaborating with other local companies, including Malahat Battery Technologies.
Ximen is a publicly listed company trading on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol XIM.
