In a major step forward for developer productivity and AI integration, Vancouver-based Defang Software Labs has officially launched a major upgrade to Defang, an AI-enabled tool designed to streamline cloud deployments for developers.
At the heart of the launch is Defang’s adoption of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — an industry standard that promises to redefine how AI models interact with external systems.
Often described as a “universal translator” for AI applications, MCP enables artificial intelligence to communicate with tools and data sources in real time — much like how USB-C standardized hardware connections. With MCP, AI models are no longer siloed or limited to static outputs. Instead, they can securely execute tasks, pull live data, and deliver richer, context-aware responses.
Defang has embedded MCP directly into its platform, making it possible for developers to deploy applications to the cloud with simple, natural language commands from within their favorite IDEs such as Cursor, VS Code, or Windsurf. Once the Defang MCP Server is installed, developers can trigger deployments using intuitive prompts like “deploy,” bypassing traditional DevOps complexity.
The Defang MCP Server tool scans the project for required configurations and handles deployment automatically, ensuring proper configuration for security, performance, and scale. The Defang Portal offers real-time monitoring — including service URLs, status indicators, and performance metrics.
“We’re building for a future where developers can launch scalable applications by simply asking their tools to do it,” said Lionello Lunesu, co-founder of Defang. “MCP makes that future possible.”
Founded in 2022 by Lunesu and Prakash Sundaresan, Defang is gaining traction across Canada and beyond.
The startup participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator and was named one of Techcouver’s Startups to Watch in 2025.
