Vancouver Startup Week (VSW) 2025 is just around the corner — running May 20–23 — and with the global spotlight of Web Summit Vancouver on the horizon, this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever.
Techcouver caught up with VSW 2025 Co-Chairs Katty Wang and Vivian Lago to talk about what’s new this year, how VSW is helping entrepreneurs build momentum, and why there’s never been a better time to get involved in Vancouver’s innovation and business community.
To start things off—can you tell us a little about yourselves and your connection to Vancouver’s startup community?
KW: I was once a founder myself in 2015 and realized I desperately needed to be a part of the local business community for support. Vancouver Startup Week was in its early years then, and it has provided me connections, support, and knowledge to launch (and ultimately fold) my first business, and great friendships along the way. Even though I folded my company in 2017, I continued to chair Vancouver Startup Week, hoping to provide the same resources and support to other founders like me.
VL: I’ve worked across Vancouver’s startup and innovation ecosystem for over 15 years — from running accelerator programs at Wavefront to building partnerships at New Ventures BC. I now lead programming at YELL Canada and run my own consulting practice. Co-chairing VSW lets me bring people together to support and celebrate entrepreneurship in all its forms.
What does it mean to you to co-chair Vancouver Startup Week 2025?
KW: It’s a huge honour — and honestly, a lot of fun. Vancouver Startup Week is where ideas, energy, and people collide in the best way. Helping shape the experience and create space for entrepreneurs at all stages to connect and grow feels incredibly rewarding. Seeing the VSW team behind the scenes, close to 30 very dedicated volunteers, work day and night to bring one of the biggest conferences and celebrations annually is so rewarding. I’m so proud of my team, and Vivian, my partner-in-crime.
With Web Summit Vancouver on the horizon, how do you see VSW playing a role in spotlighting our local startups on a global stage?
VL: Vancouver Startup Week sets the stage for what’s ahead. It’s our chance to showcase the energy, creativity, and resilience of our business and innovation community before the world arrives for Web Summit. With initiatives like Innovate BC’s Road to Web Summit helping elevate standout ventures, VSW becomes a key moment to build momentum, forge connections, and tell the stories that will carry our entrepreneurs onto the global stage. We want the world to see that Vancouver isn’t just preparing for that spotlight — we’re already thriving in it.
What are some trends or sectors you’re especially excited to see represented at VSW this year?
KW: I’m really excited to see how values-driven innovation continues to take centre stage — especially in areas like climate solutions, mental health, education, and inclusive business. Vancouver has a uniquely purpose-led entrepreneurial culture, and it’s inspiring to see that reflected in the ventures that show up at VSW.
How do you hope VSW 2025 supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey?
VL: We’ve worked hard to make VSW more inclusive and accessible than ever. Whether you’re just getting started or scaling a growing venture, there’s something here for you — from real-world advice to genuine community. It’s not just about showcasing success; it’s about supporting the journey.
For someone looking to launch or scale their startup, what’s the biggest reason they should attend VSW 2025?
KW: You’ll find your people. The mentors, collaborators, investors, and future teammates who believe in building something bigger than themselves. VSW isn’t just an event — it’s a catalyst for connection and momentum.
