Vancouver’s FUTURi Power and Richmond’s Foreseeson Technology are among the recipients of $1.6 million in funding announced today by NorthX Climate Tech to accelerate Canadian energy storage innovation.
FUTURi Power is developing a bidirectional system that allows energy to flow between the grid and both EVs and stationary batteries, turning them into flexible grid assets. Foreseeson Technology is advancing EV charging by pairing fast DC power with responsive energy storage, enabling rapid charging without costly grid upgrades.
Both companies were chosen through NorthX’s Call for Energy Storage Innovation, run in partnership with BC Hydro to identify and scale breakthrough solutions. The program also backed Alberta’s Aqua-Cell Energy, which is piloting a saltwater-based, long-duration battery on a Victoria microgrid.
“By backing companies that can deliver real, scalable energy storage solutions, we can ensure our electricity system remains affordable, reliable, and resilient as demand grows,” said Sarah Goodman, President & CEO of NorthX.
BC Hydro CEO Charlotte Mitha emphasized that energy storage “helps customers manage their energy use, save money, and avoid major infrastructure upgrades—while also reducing peak demand and easing pressure on the grid.”
For British Columbia, the projects highlight local leadership in tackling one of the toughest challenges in the energy transition: how to store and dispatch clean power when it’s needed most.
