Chinese multinational tech conglomerate Tencent has acquired a majority stake in Vancouver’s Klei Entertainment.
The acquisition news comes by way of a forum post from Klei founder Jamie Cheng. According to Cheng, “Klei retains full autonomy of creative and operations across all aspects of the studio, including projects, talent, and more.”
Klei was founded by Cheng in 2005 and has grown to over 35 employees. Prior to the formation of Klei, Cheng worked as a programmer at Relic Entertainment, then owned by THQ.

Klei’s relationship with Tencent dates back to 2016 when they distributed Klei games in China with Don’t Starve Together being the very first game to launch on the WeGame platform.
Today’s acquisition follows on not one, not two, but three acquisitions in the gaming space in November 2020 that saw $250+ million dollars flooding into the market as global players added independent studios to their IP portfolios.
