UBC Ushers In Next Wave Of Startups

February 25, 2021 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

Since its inception in 2013, entrepreneurship@UBC – the University of British Columbia’s incubator/accelerator program – has supported 484 ventures that have gone on to raise more than $1.38 billion in financing, $104 million in revenue and create over 919 full-time jobs, creating tangible economic and social impact.

The program works with early stage entrepreneurs across the university (students – undergrad to PhD, faculty, staff and alumni) at the outset of their venture building journeys, helping to propel the research and innovation coming from UBCinto viable companies that can thrive.

Alumni of the program ABOzymes and Daanaa were named to Techcouver’s 10 Homegrown B.C. Startups to Watch in 2021 list.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the program transformed into an entirely digital approach and has seen a 15% increase in enrollment.

This week entrepreneurship@UBC announced the newest cohorts of ventures to join its entrepreneurship@UBC’s CORE and HATCH Accelerator Venture Building programs. The new cohorts include 33 ventures joining the CORE program and six new ventures joining HATCH.

“We have some truly amazing ventures as part of entrepreneurship@UBC’s programs representing the next wave of anchor companies in BC, and Canada more broadly. The increase in enrollment is testament to the program, its efficacy and importance of bolstering UBC innovation, ” shared Fraser Pogue, CORE Venture Activator, EiR, entrepreneurship@UBC.

All ventures receive early-stage education, industry mentorship and community designed to validate their innovation and market need to transform ideas to impact.

Further along in their journey, the founders of the newest HATCH ventures work with entrepreneurship@UBC’s bench of Entrepreneurs and Executives in Residence to secure advisory boards, pilots and partnerships and prepare for investment and growth.

Meet the six ventures to join the HATCH Accelerator:
