The Science Fair Foundation of BC (SFFBC) announced the launch of the first BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair for students grades 4 to 12, in light of COVID-19.
The 2021 BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair is now accepting registrations, with project submissions accepted from until March 5th. The presentations and judging will take place between April 6 to 11th, with winners announced at a final celebration on April 14th.
“With gathering restrictions prohibiting most traditional science fairs, we wanted to ensure that young scientists still had the opportunity to present their projects and benefit from the mentorship that comes with the science fair program,” said Madeleine Guenette, Executive Director of the Science Fair Foundation of BC.
Students from multiple regions who would normally host their own fair are invited to participate, including the Pacific Northwest, Fraser Valley, West Kootenay, South Fraser, Central Okanagan, Central Interior and southern Vancouver Island region.
SFFBC is the largest volunteer science outreach network in the province, with over 1,500 science and technology educators and professionals volunteering as mentors, judges and science fair hosts.
The foundation offers students the opportunity to create original scientific research or innovative projects, which are then displayed at various levels of competition. In British Columbia, 13 regional fairs are part of the over 100 fairs held across Canada every year.
In addition to its regional competitions and fairs, SFFBC also has other programs, including the Youth Innovation Showcase, a new podcast called Let’s Innovate!, and Sweatin’ for Science.
