As nations gather at COP26 to negotiate the emissions reductions necessary to achieve 2030 climate goals and net zero emissions by 2050, Vancouver’s Freightera has a working solution that is already reducing carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
Freightera achieves this by automatically redirecting freight to existing, lower emission carriers.
Using data from the US EPA SmartWay program, Freightera calculates the net emissions reduction for multiple greenhouse gases and air pollutants and compares these with fleet averages.
Without regulation and allowing shippers to simply chose the lowest emission or lowest cost option, Freightera is achieving 20%+ plus CO2e reduction right now for 670 firms, and 50%+ reductions for 130 firms.
In a new article titled ‘Accelerating the Transition to Zero Emission Freight Shipping‘ published last week in Climate Change: The New Economy (CCTNE), Freightera Founder and CEO Eric Beckwitt explains how the platform works.
“Freightera recently rolled out a “CO2e Savings” badge, which allows shippers to select carriers based on the net CO2e emissions reduction each carrier is achieving. Based on initial analysis, over 670 firms using Freightera in 2021 have already reduced CO2e emissions 20% or more, and 130 firms have reduced emissions 50% or more.”
According to Our World in Data, transportation is currently 21% of global C02 emissions. Road freight transport is 29.4% of these emissions, but growing fast in many countries. According to the Pembina Institute, in Canada between 2005-2019 transportation emissions increased by 16% with freight increasing at three times the rate of passenger emissions.
While many firms are developing lower- and zero-emission trucks, trains, planes, ships and barges, the high cost of new vehicles, and long service life means many vehicles (especially ships and locomotives) in use today will still be in use in 2050.
Freightera’s solution allows firms to achieve immediate CO2e emissions reductions in line with 2030 nationally determined targets even before widespread deployment of new lower emission vehicles.
The Freightera platform is currently available in Canada, the USA and cross border. In cooperation with governments and private investors, the company plans to scale the platform globally within 3-5 years.
Based in Vancouver, Freightera was named to Deloitte’s Technology Fast50 in 2020 and ranked among Canada’s Top Growing Companies by The Globe and Mail.
