The University of British Columbia announced recently that Dr. Sean Lumb will take on an interim leadership role for its startup venture program program.
Effective May 18, Dr. Lumb will be taking over administrative leadership of entrepreneurship@UBC. He replaces outgoing Managing Director Kari LaMotte, who served in her role for four years.
Dr. Lumb, both a PhD and serial entrepreneur, returned to Canada and joined UBC in 2013 to help launch entrepreneurship@UBC. In 2016, he drove the launch of the unit’s Life Science stream, and in 2020 expanded it to include other opportunities in clean-tech, engineering, and hardware—with a rebrand as Lab2Launch.
“Dr. Lumb has been pivotal in leading the continued evolution of entrepreneurship@UBC,” a statement from the university reads.
Since inception, entrepreneurship@UBC has mobilized UBC innovation and helps translate the university’s research—such as on important data on sport injuries and stretchy, washable batteries—into tangible impact through the creation of ventures.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Lumb serve in this capacity,” the University stated. “Entrepreneurship@UBC [will] continue to support the translation of leading edge innovations, from invention to impact, through venture creation.”
