University of British Columbia graduate Gury Singh has launched a startup to help urbanites keep their phones charged when on the go.
The Vancouver-based ElectricGo has quietly rolled out more than 100 of its signature smartphone power bar rental kiosks across the Lower Mainland.
“We found ourselves in the situations so many people do on a daily basis: dead battery out at a bar or restaurant or anywhere else,” Ross Pearson, Chief Operations Manager for ElectricGo, told Techcouver. “Most people would rather avoid the inconvenience of carrying a portable charger around with the necessary cords all day.”
A kiosk can be accessed via QR code and ElectricGo app. Each power bar includes cables. Charging starts at 75 cents per half hour, up to $6 per day.
“ElectricGo is an all-in-one portable charging product that is readily available where most people tend to find themselves at the end of a long day out in need of a charge,” said Pearson.
If a user does not want to be physically stuck at a kiosk, power bars can be rented and taken off-site for up to eight days. When done, pop the power bar back into any ElectricGo kiosk.
“The sole focus is currently on our kiosks and ensuring we can station them everywhere a Vancouverite may find themselves in need of a quick charge,” Pearson told Techcouver, noting that the startup is actively adding more kiosks to the region.
Until June 15, ElectricGo is offering up to 24 hours of charging free.
