Netflix is acquiring Australian animation and visual effects studio Animal Logic to accelerate their animation production.
Animal Logic is recognized as one of the world’s leading independent creative digital studios, producing award winning design, visual effects and animation for over 30 years.
“Together, we’ll create an animation studio that will produce some of our largest animated feature films,” Netflix said in the shareholder letter.
Animal Logic has about 800 employees, mostly based in Sydney and Vancouver.
Earlier this year the studio announced that they would double their workforce in Vancouver and expand their local presence with new space in the Mount Pleasant district.
As the anchor tenant of the future M4 office building at Westbank’s Main Alley tech campus, the company will occupy 110,000 square feet across multiple floors in the building at 110 East 5th Avenue, about a five-minute walk from SkyTrain’s future Mount Pleasant Station.
The new studio within M4 will be more than twice the size of Animal Logic’s original 45,000 sq ft space in Yaletown, where the company first established its presence upon initially opening in Vancouver in 2015.
“Netflix has been investing in animation over the past few years and this furthers our commitment to building a world-class animation studio,” Amy Reinhard, Netflix vice president of studio operations, said in a statement.
Animal Logic’s early years in Vancouver were busy working on the LEGO series of movies. It is anticipated that the new Vancouver studio at M4 will generate an additional 300 jobs.
