You are appointed as the CEO of a brand new interdisciplinary arts centre—a culture hub designed for tomorrow’s world. As you’re making strategic decisions and reacting to global and local events, which principles and values will guide your choices?
Future Arts Centre is a “serious game” that is also a potential simulation for real life: while still fun, FAC is dedicated to skills development in the cultural sector.
Developed in late 2021 and launched this summer, the so-called “serious” game is a collaboration between the Embassy of France to Canada, the Réseau des indépendants de la Musique and the Union Fédérale d’Intervention des Structures Culturelles in France, as well as the Alliance Française of Vancouver, Art of Festivals, and the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver.
The project was spearheaded by Alexandre Col, a cultural attaché in Vancouver from France. His team consulted Arts Umbrella and Griffin Art Project during development.
Ten years ago, Alexandre felt the need for a different way to work on cultural and arts projects—a new approach to develop a vision that would allow professionals to simulate different scenarios and the complex and intricate issues related to such projects. How could learning about the co-construction of public policies, forecasting human resources, and such be taught in a genuinely fun way?
The seed of a “serious game,” or simulation, was planted back then and finally recently blossomed.
The bilingual simulation-style game’s primary goal is to help players grasp and better understand the future organizational environment and challenges of professional creative and exhibition spaces. This training and coaching experience can played in a single-player format or with peers and allows users to imagine and discover the trends and issues at work in the cultural sector. Players must develop a strategic, long-term vision for their space.
Future Arts Centre is an artificial intelligence-based game which covers five spheres of action: Strategy and policy; Artistic programming; Governance; People; and Building and equipment.
