It was reported last year that Square Enix was developing a mobile game based on the intellectual property of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a popular multimedia franchise since 2005.
The UK’s Square Enix, known for major videogames like Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider, tapped Navigator Games in BC to help develop the Airbender app. The game has been titled Avatar: Generations.
“It has been a huge privilege to partner with Square Enix on the creation of a game with such an iconic IP like Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Will Moore, CEO of Navigator, said in a statement in October.
Navigator Games was founded in Vancouver in 2016 and since then has grown into “a dynamic and enthusiastic team of videogame developers.” Prior to its collaboration with Square Enix Mobile, Navigator was best known for its role-playing game Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, based off the seasoned English heavy metal band.
The BC startup describes itself as an expert at “building and operating high quality RPGs with a principal focus on authenticity with blockbuster music, movie and comic franchises.” The company prefers “deep and innovative IP partnerships” to create “immersive game play and inspiring marketing campaigns.”
After many months of development, the open-world RPG of Generations has soft-launched this month.
“[The Airbender] universe has so many layers and complex storylines to explore and we look forward to fully unveiling it and sharing it with all the incredibly passionate and loyal Avatar fans,” Moore stated.
The free-to-play game follows the stories of main character Aang and others as they travel the world in a recreation of the original Nickelodeon TV series.
“Journey across the four nations in a living adventure map with puzzle-like exploration,” the game description reads. “Send parties to each corner of the world to auto-battle, earning tons of valuable resources and upgrades, whilst battling with another party elsewhere!”
