Vancouver Joins Toronto and Seattle As Fastest Growing Tech Cities

July 13, 2021 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Vancouver added more than 24,000 tech jobs from 2016 to 2020, an increase of more than 36%, according to a new analysis by the CBRE real estate firm.

In Scoring Tech Talent, CBRE explores what markets have the biggest tech talent pools—and what markets are seeing the biggest growth.

Vancouver joined Toronto (42%) and Seattle (35%) in the top three, growing at a faster rate than any other large North American tech market.

Seattle’s ranking should not come as a surprise. CBRE’s report confirms the meteoric growth of the region’s tech industry in the latter half of the past decade. The trend has been driven by the expansion of Silicon Valley engineering outposts in the Seattle area, the extraordinary growth of Amazon, and the revival of Microsoft.

Toronto and Vancouver’s growth is largely attributed to restrictive U.S. immigration policies that have benefitted all Canadian cities.

The report also studied new tech-related college degrees in the context of overall tech jobs added in each region to determine whether a market was able to retain the talent produced by its universities.

Vancouver ranked fourth behind Toronto, Seattle, and Montreal.
