Linus Tech Tips Growing Garage Startup into Digital Media Empire

November 14, 2022 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

YouTube was a different sort of platform, operating on a different kind of internet, back when Linus Sebastian launched his first channel.

The content creator’s success through Linus Tech Tips has transcended shifts in social media and other technologies. The friendly and helpful persona of Linus himself—and more recently, a growing team of co-creators—is what 15 million viewers now subscribe to.

The content creator is not just entertaining and informative but also business-savvy. It was nearly a decade ago now that Linus founded his own media group, which he launched alongside his wife Yvonne Ho in 2013.

Like all good tech startups, Linus Media Group started in a garage. The firm’s modest beginnings were journaled by Linus himself during the early days.

“Up to 7 total team members,” he humbly tweeted in late 2014. “Couldn’t do it without the support of all of you.”

Today, the steadily growing operation runs several different brands and projects.

“Linus Media Group is a full service production agency with decades of collective experience in web video and social media and influencer marketing,” the Surrey-based company explains. “We’ve worked with brands as small as cottage-industry one-person operations all the way to large multinationals like Intel, IBM, and Cisco.”

LMG-owned YouTube channels include Techquickie (4 million subs), TechLinked (1.8 million), and ShortCircuit (2 million). There’s also an annual Linus Tech Expo held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, as well as an online merchandise store.

“Over the years we’ve built a community of millions of consumer and professional technology enthusiasts on YouTube, social media, and our own community forum,” says LMG.

The BC firm has worked with notable Canadian companies, including Ottawa’s Shopify and Toronto’s FreshBooks.

“Our passion for video creation, storytelling, and technology makes us a perfect partner,” LMG believes. “We not only have a deep understanding of technology, but also of the people who use it.”

LMG informed TechTalent.ca that they are actively hiring and will be attending this month’s Job Fair to accelerate the process of expanding their workforce. Roles currently available at LMG include social media coordinator, writers, video producers, and of course all manner of software developer.

Tech Talent Canada’s virtual job fair is a quarterly affair that connects growing Canadian companies with top talent across the country.

“In a unique twist, hiring companies showcase their employer brand and pitch to a crowd of skilled candidates on why they’re the best place to around,” event organizer Rob Lewis stated. “This allows talent to align their values with the right company in order to forge an epic career path.”

The next event is November 23 and is free for job-seekers.
