A Snapshot of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Tech Workforce

December 4, 2023 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Nearly 300,000 technology jobs have been created in Canada over the past six years, according to a report from CompTIA, with more employment growth projected moving forward.

Net tech employment cracked 1,350,000 workers in 2022, data from the nonprofit association for the information technology industry and workforce shows, with further expansion to come.

Tech employment is projected to grow by more than 1% this year, resulting in nearly 1.4 million total workers across the country, according to CompTIA’s “State of the Tech Workforce Canada.”

Vancouver boasts Canada’s third largest metropolitan area by tech employment, with a workforce nearly 150,000 strong, State of Workforce found. The city gained almost 4,000 workers this year alone.

In fact, Vancouver has been home to Canada’s fastest-growing tech force for multiple years now.

Not only is Vancouver’s tech workforce large and rapidly expanding, but tech as a sector is also dominant in the region’s broader workforce: tech workers make up nearly 9% of Vancouver’s total workforce, the second highest rate in Canada behind Toronto (10%).

According to the report, Vancouver has 4,500 local tech companies—as much as Calgary and Edmonton combined but still far less than Montreal (8,000) or Toronto (20,000).

Across all of BC, there are 190,000 techies, who represent 6.5% of the workforce, and 6,400 tech firms.

The estimated median annual wage for a technology worker in Canada is currently $88,000, the State of the Tech Workforce shows—which is 48% higher than the median national wage for all occupations, but still much lower than US tech workers.

Vancouver pays an average of $92,000, while the provincial average is $90,000.

At an impact north of $110 billion, the tech industry represents more than 5% of Canada’s overall economy.
