Legal-Tech Startup AltFee Wins Clio-Sponsored Pitch Competition

February 26, 2024 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

A North Vancouver-born legal tech company that enables law firms to be confident and successful with the scoping and pricing of their services through the effective use of fixed fees and value-based pricing recently won a pitch competition at an industry event in Chicago.

BC’s AltFee won the multi-stage legal-tech pitch comp at the American Bar Association’s TECHSHOW, an annual conference that connects the organization’s 170,000 members, bringing together major players across the world of legal-focused technology.

The TECHSHOW competition was hosted by Clio, a Vancouver-based legal-tech pioneer and centaur, with chief executive officer Jack Newton personally presenting the award.

The sponsorship is a natural fit: Clio itself was launched at the 2008 TECHSHOW, and the company has since grown into a global force with over 150,000 customers across more than 100 countries.

And the two local legal-techs have even more in common. In 2022, Clio integrated with AltFee.

AltFee provides an alternative fee arrangement system to help lawyers scope out fixed fees, improving the client-lawyer relationship and boosting realization rates—making the startup’s platform an obvious fit for Clio’s expanding ecosystem of 200+ integrated apps.

“With the increased adoption of AI and other efficiency gaining technologies into law firms which reduce the time it takes to complete billable tasks, law firms must re-evaluate their pricing models to ensure their pricing aligns with the value of their services,” says Scott Leigh, one of the cofounders behind AltFee.

This specific integration allows mutual customers to optimize their flat fee scoping and pricing through the core workflow in AltFee to seamlessly generate consistent flat fee invoices in Clio as well as track the success of flat fees by comparing flat fee prices to the amount recorded to each matter.

“Integrating with Clio has been a milestone on our roadmap from the early days, as the overlap in Clio’s customer base and our target market is tremendous,” Leigh stated in 2022. “Our partnership will empower the legal industry to deliver improved law practices through alternative fees.”

“A transparent fixed fee is a significant foundation for trust in the attorney-client relationship,” added Jonathan Watson, Chief Technology Officer at Clio, at the time. “AltFee has introduced an innovative software solution for better pricing, and we are excited to integrate their technology into Clio.”

AltFee was founded in 2020 by Scott, Digby R., and Digby C. Leigh.
