Blackbird Interactive Restructures for Growth Amid Industry Shifts

March 13, 2025 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Vancouver-based game developer Blackbird Interactive (BBI), known for titles like Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Homeworld 3, has announced a strategic plan to ensure long-term stability amid industry challenges.

This initiative includes a minority investment from London-based Emona Capital, leadership restructuring, and a renewed focus on external development partnerships.

The investment from Emona Capital provides BBI with the resources to adapt and expand, supporting both original IPs and external projects.

Emona Capital’s managing partner, Dominik Dolenec, expressed confidence in BBI’s future, stating, “BBI’s track record of delivering high-quality, innovative experiences speaks for itself—we’re excited to support the studio as it continues to build for the future.”

Leadership changes at BBI include founder and former CEO Rob Cunningham transitioning to chair of the board of directors, focusing on strategic oversight. Eric Torin, previously chief strategy officer, has assumed the role of CEO, while Rory McGuire, the current president, now also serves as chief creative officer, overseeing all game development.

CEO Eric Torin emphasized the necessity of these changes, stating, “The tectonic shifts happening in the games industry demand bold, decisive action. Our partnership with Emona Capital, organizational changes, and new strategic vision let us play to our strengths by providing incredible value to our partners while fostering a culture of innovation, sustainability, and success.”

This move comes at a time when Vancouver continues to be a significant hub for game development in Canada.

According to a recent report, British Columbia houses nearly 150 game studios employing approximately 11,000 individuals, primarily in the Vancouver area. This positions B.C. as the second-largest game development hub in Canada, following Quebec.
