Vancouver’s Spare, a leading provider of AI-powered transit operations software, has launched a new feature aimed at tackling unpredictable road conditions: Spare Live Traffic.
The feature integrates live, real-time routing data from Google Maps Platform directly into Spare’s Driver App, and is already live in select cities with a broader rollout planned for the coming weeks.
Spare Live Traffic marks a significant upgrade to transit operations by moving beyond static schedules and historical traffic patterns. Instead, drivers and agencies will now have real-time awareness of congestion, collisions, and road closures—critical data that can lead to smarter routing decisions and fewer delays.
“This is a significant leap forward for both riders and drivers,” said Kristoffer Vik Hansen, CEO of Spare. “Our integration with Google Maps Platform brings live traffic-aware navigation directly to drivers, enabling better on-time performance and empowering agencies to deliver the kind of reliability that passengers expect.”
Early data from pilot implementations shows the feature is already having an impact. Transit agencies using the new integration have reported a reduction of up to 20% in late trips, a substantial improvement for paratransit services where rider dependability is paramount.
Tanya Acevedo, CIO of CapMetro in Austin, Texas, praised the feature as a “critical technological step forward,” noting that it allows operations teams to make data-driven decisions for a more predictable service.
Susi Trinandad, ADA Paratransit Administrator at RTC of Washoe in Reno, Nevada, echoed that sentiment. “Our operators are excited about the seamless integration of Google Maps into our Spare platform, particularly appreciating the audio navigation features that enhance the overall experience.”
The new integration builds on Spare’s existing AI-driven engine, which already models traffic patterns to optimize transit schedules. By layering in live Google Maps data, the company adds another level of precision and adaptability. Drivers benefit from a familiar turn-by-turn navigation interface, while agencies can dynamically adjust routes in response to evolving conditions on the road.
With Spare Live Traffic, transit providers can expect:
- Dynamic route adjustments to avoid real-time congestion and delays
- Improved on-time performance and reduced late trips
- Streamlined operator experience with Google Maps navigation embedded directly in the Driver App
The launch underscores Spare’s growing influence in modernizing public transit, particularly in the paratransit sector. As urban mobility systems look for ways to improve reliability and efficiency, Spare’s latest innovation positions the company at the forefront of transit tech evolution.
