The European Patent Office has granted Vancouver-based VoltSafe a foundational patent for its prongless power connector technology, significantly expanding the company’s global intellectual property footprint and paving the way for commercialization across Europe.
VoltSafe has reimagined how people connect to electricity by eliminating traditional prongs, incorporating magnets, and introducing a secure “electrical fingerprint” that enables intelligent power recognition. The result is what the company calls the safest, simplest, and smartest plug design since electricity first entered homes more than 140 years ago.
The company’s product pipeline spans applications in residential, commercial, industrial, marine, electric and autonomous vehicles, defense, emergency services, and data centres.
The EPO decision extends VoltSafe’s IP protection to 39 European countries, joining previously granted patents in the United States, Canada, China, and other regions. This strengthens VoltSafe’s global position and opens the door to strategic licensing agreements with major players in industrial, marine, defense, and consumer electronics sectors.
“Patents are a passport to global commercialization,” said Trevor Burgess, Co-Founder & CEO of VoltSafe. “They serve as a green light for companies that want to license, integrate, or invest in the next generation of power delivery. With an estimated 30 billion pronged devices in use and 6 billion daily users, VoltSafe sees a blue ocean of opportunity ahead.”
Europe represents a key growth market for VoltSafe. The continent’s emphasis on electrification, cleantech adoption, and smart infrastructure aligns closely with VoltSafe’s patented technology. With recent EU Green Deal initiatives and growing investment in marine electrification, the European market is primed for innovation. Securing patent protection in the region cements VoltSafe’s ability to scale across a regulation-driven market that values safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
VoltSafe is now actively pursuing commercialization and partnership opportunities across the EU as it continues its global expansion.
