Cellulotech Secures Seed Funding to Replace Plastics with Green Chemistry Breakthrough

July 8, 2025 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Victoria-based Cellulotech has closed a seed funding round to accelerate the commercial rollout of its patented solvent-free cellulose functionalization technology—a breakthrough that could significantly reduce the use of plastics and harmful chemicals across multiple industries.

The round was led by Neglected Climate Opportunities, a subsidiary of the Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust, with participation from Meliorate Partners, an early-stage sustainability-focused venture fund.

Cellulotech’s core innovation enables the transformation of cellulose—the world’s most abundant organic compound—into a scalable, cost-effective, and fully recyclable alternative to plastic, PFAS, and other unsustainable materials. Its applications span sectors such as packaging, hygiene, textiles, construction, and paper products, offering a potential pathway to detoxify and decarbonize global supply chains.

“We’re excited to join forces with investors who not only have decades of experience scaling breakthrough technologies but also share our ambitious, long‑term vision,” said Romain Metivet, Co‑Founder and CEO of Cellulotech.

Dr. Daniel Samain, Co‑Founder and Scientific Director, added, “Their support recognizes my discovery, and nothing is more exciting than seeing it finally reach the market.”

As consumer demand, investor scrutiny, and regulatory pressures mount around sustainability, Cellulotech aims to set a new standard in material innovation—offering a “green discount” by making sustainable alternatives not only viable but cheaper than traditional options.

With fresh capital in hand, the B.C.-based startup plans to expand production capabilities and bring its green chemistry solution to market at scale.
