Vancouver-based UpMeals has rebranded its operations platform as Demi, marking a shift from a meal-focused business to a broader software platform for food operators.
Founded by professional caterer Drew Munro and Red Seal chef and registered holistic nutritionist Ryan Angel, UpMeals began as a provider of healthy, custom meals delivered through touchscreen smart vending machines. The company works with organizations to offer individually packaged meals designed by chefs and nutritionists, available 24/7.
As the business scaled, Munro says the team realized the technology powering UpMeals had grown beyond its original purpose. The internal system used to manage food production, inventory, and distribution was increasingly being adopted by other food businesses, including commissaries, meal prep companies, and grocery programs.
That platform — now rebranded as Demi — is designed to streamline foodservice operations, automate workflows, and reduce waste, effectively serving as an operating system for modern food businesses.
The name draws from culinary tradition. In cooking, “demi” refers to reduction — the process of simplifying complexity into its most concentrated form. It also references the demi chef, the station chef’s right hand responsible for keeping operations running smoothly. Munro says both meanings reflect the role the software is intended to play.
“This rebrand marks the start of the next chapter in our journey to build the most intelligent operations system for the foodservice industry,” said Munro. “While our name may have changed, our mission is the same: to help food operators spend less time managing details and more time creating great food experiences.”
