SFU Entrepreneur Advances New Incontinence Therapy

November 17, 2025 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

A Vancouver medtech entrepreneur is being recognized for developing a minimally invasive, affordable treatment for urinary incontinence — a condition affecting nearly one in two Canadian women over 65.

Fattah Haeri, co-founder of Femera Med Tech, has been named Mitacs Canadian Startup Innovator of the Year. The award, presented November 17 in Ottawa, honours entrepreneurs who turn research into market-ready innovation.

Haeri, a biomedical engineer and recent SFU Beedie MBA graduate, led the development of a radiofrequency-based vaginal probe designed to restore tissue elasticity and strengthen pelvic floor muscles. The technology, built with collaborators M.H. Saadatfar and Nima Kohandani, aims to offer a safe alternative to costly surgery and laser-based treatments.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are — millions of women suffer from incontinence and are often reluctant to talk about it,” said Haeri, who invented his first medical device at 17.

Femera’s treatment is delivered through short, clinic-based sessions that gradually taper over time. Early data — soon to be published — suggests faster recovery compared to existing therapies. The startup is now preparing clinical trials as it moves through North American regulatory approvals.

Haeri credits Mitacs and Health Research BC for helping accelerate development. “The support of Mitacs goes well beyond funding,” he said. “They truly want to see my company succeed.”

Haeri is one of 11 national winners recognized across categories including Outstanding Innovation, Research Leadership, Inclusive Innovation, and Enterprise Innovation.
