10 Homegrown B.C. Startups to Watch in 2026

January 5, 2026 by Robert Lewis Leave a Comment

British Columbia has long punched above its weight in innovation—but heading into 2026, a new wave of homegrown startups is beginning to show real momentum.

The companies on this list reflect where B.C.’s ecosystem is gaining strength: climate and energy technologies built for deployment, AI platforms focused on practical outcomes, and science-led ventures translating research into commercial impact. While still early, each has reached an important inflection point through customer traction, funding, technical validation, or growing industry recognition.

What unites them is execution. These startups are building real systems—powering grids, factories, farms, hospitals, and supply chains—designed to operate in complex, real-world environments. As markets recalibrate around resilience, sustainability, and applied AI, these ten B.C. companies are well positioned to make 2026 a defining year.

Baerfell

Baerfell is a UBC spinoff developing a plant-based alternative to synthetic and down insulation. Co-founded by Feng Jiang and Marc Massicotte, the company’s hemp-aerogel material is designed for winter jackets, sleeping pads, and insulated packaging for shipping temperature-sensitive materials such as vaccines.

In 2025, Baerfell won the New Venture BC Sustainability Prize and unveiled a prototype insulated vest in collaboration with Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Looking ahead to 2026, Baerfell plans to advance pilot manufacturing, deepen industry partnerships, and move closer to commercial deployment.

Binta Financial

Binta Financial is a Vancouver-based fintech making credit truly borderless and advancing financial inclusion for newcomers. Co-founded by Paschal Okwundu (CEO) and Brian Mukeswe (CTO), Binta Financial enables immigrants to carry verified credit histories across borders and begin building local credit from day one through tools like rent reporting and AI-powered financial guidance.

The platform helps users access housing, loans, and employment faster while avoiding the need to start from scratch financially. After winning first place at the 2025 New Ventures BC Competition, Binta is positioned to scale its impact and expand partnerships as it heads into 2026.

Bridge2AI

Bridge2AI is a Vancouver-based AI scheduling system redefining how OEMs and manufacturers manage workforce, equipment, and inventory for clearer, actionable insights. Co-founded by Pierre-Antoine Descoteaux and Niels de Vries, the modular platform boosts competitiveness without major capital expenditure or added headcount.

Designed to help Canadian electronics manufacturers tackle productivity and profitability challenges, Bridge2AI delivers measurable results: a flagship customer reported 20%+ efficiency gains, 30%+ faster delivery, and 998% on-time performance by leveraging AI-driven planning and prioritization. The company positions AI scheduling as a practical, immediate step toward a more resilient manufacturing future.

FireSwarm

FireSwarm is a Squamish-based wildfire technology startup developing autonomous ultra-heavy-lift drone swarms for early wildfire detection and suppression. Founded in 2023 by Alex Deslauriers (CEO), David Thanh (COO), and Melanie Bitner (CMO), the company is building AI-driven aircraft capable of operating at night and in low-visibility conditions when traditional aerial response is limited.

FireSwarm has earned national attention as a BC Tech Impact Awards finalist and an XPRIZE Wildfire competitor. As wildfire seasons intensify, FireSwarm is positioning itself to scale deployments and partnerships across North America in 2026.

Fuse Power

Vancouver-based Fuse Power Management is a cleantech startup turning electric vehicles into grid assets. Its AI-driven Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology enables parked EV fleets to support energy grids, stabilizing demand and reducing emissions while unlocking new revenue streams for fleet owners.

Fuse is deploying real-world Vehicle-to-Grid projects with partners like BC Hydro and municipal fleets, and was named a finalist for the 2025 BC Tech Technology Impact Awards. Led by CEO Rob Safrata, the company aims to integrate EVs, chargers, utilities, and data into one intelligent energy network that accelerates clean, reliable electrification.

Insporos

Insporos is a Vancouver-based agtech startup building advanced seed-sorting technology that analyzes individual seeds for defects and disease to boost planting success, reduce waste, and improve crop predictability.

Founded in 2023 by co-founders Mallory Flynn and Amanda Ackroyd, Insporos was named Startup of the Year at BC Tech’s 2025 Technology Impact Awards (TIAs). With a focus on empowering growers and strengthening sustainable food systems, the company’s “Grow Predictably” mission aims to transform how seeds are evaluated before planting.

Maia Farms

Founded by Gavin Schneider, Ashton Ostrander, and Sean Lacoursiere, Maia Farms is a Vancouver-based foodtech company developing sustainable mushroom and mycelium ingredients to improve global food security. The company works at the intersection of food technology and social impact, including its Nourish Life Mission partnership with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

In 2025, Maia Farms closed $6.5M in total funding, including a $3.25M private placement led by Canadian venture capital firms, with additional investors to be announced. Looking ahead to 2026, the company plans to expand its scientific and engineering team and open a new research facility in Vancouver.

Simuhealth

Simuhealth is modernizing the operational backbone of healthcare simulation training. Founded in 2024 by Matthew Housser and Howard Louie, the Vancouver startup replaces spreadsheets and fragmented tools with a purpose-built platform for logistics, asset management, performance analytics, and accreditation.

Backed by a $2.6M pre-seed round, Simuhealth is expanding across Canadian and U.S. hospitals and academic institutions, while deepening support for clients including PHSA, Island Health, Interior Health, and Fraser Health. As simulation becomes central to how healthcare professionals are trained, Simuhealth is well-positioned to become the infrastructure layer powering the future of healthcare education.

Superpilot

Superpilot is an AI-driven commerce platform designed to help online retailers accelerate growth through autonomous optimization. The company builds pre-configured AI agents that handle SEO and AEO, campaign landing pages, competitor analysis, personalization, and growth insights—allowing brands to extract more value from existing traffic and data with minimal effort.

Superpilot was co-founded by Igor Faletski and John Boxall, who previously co-founded Mobify, acquired by Salesforce. Built by experienced commerce operators, Superpilot reflects a next-generation, agentic approach to AI-powered retail execution heading into 2026.

Tydra Labs

Tydra Labs is a Vancouver-based biotech startup transforming crustacean shell waste into high-value, sustainable biomaterials such as chitin and chitosan using eco-efficient, biology-driven processes. Founded by Jaiya Varshney, Thanos Kritharis, and Vikramaditya Yadav, the company replaces harsh chemical extraction with greener alternatives for applications spanning bioplastics, cosmetics, textiles, and coatings.

Tydra gained national attention after winning the $100K Women in Tech Prize at Startupfest. As demand for circular materials accelerates, Tydra Labs is positioning itself to scale partnerships and commercialization heading into 2026.
