Moment Energy Adds NREL, Tesla Veterans

February 25, 2026 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Vancouver-based Moment Energy is bolstering its technical bench as it scales globally, appointing veteran battery scientist Dr. Kandler Smith as Technical Fellow and former Tesla engineering leader Dorian West as Strategic Advisor.

The hires deepen Moment’s battery modelling and system engineering capabilities as the company expands its second-life EV battery storage platform across North America and international markets.

“We are excited to be working with the top minds in the world as Moment Energy pushes the boundaries of battery performance as we continue to scale gigawatt-hours globally,” said CEO and Co-Founder Edward Chiang.

Smith joins after 20 years at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he led the Electrochemical Modelling & Data Science team within the Energy Storage Group. He holds nine patents in lithium-ion battery design and control, 12 software copyrights in neural networks and battery modelling, and has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles.

At Moment, he will lead advanced battery life modelling, SOC/SOH algorithm development, and second-life battery research, strengthening the company’s AI-driven Battery Management System. That system underpins its UL 1973, UL 9540, and UL 9540A-certified Luna BESS platform, which delivers more than 30% cost savings compared to first-life battery systems.

West brings 15 years of experience from Tesla (2005–2020), where he helped launch the original Roadster battery pack and later led engineering for the Model 3 and Tesla Semi prototype programs. His experience in scaling battery platforms supports Moment’s expansion into new markets and applications.

Moment has positioned itself as one of North America’s leading EV battery repurposing companies, converting retired electric vehicle batteries into bankable grid storage systems. With deeper modelling expertise and EV manufacturing leadership now embedded in its team, the Vancouver cleantech is signaling it intends to compete at gigawatt-hour scale.
