Vancouver’s Ballard Power Systems has secured its largest single commitment from longtime partner New Flyer, strengthening British Columbia’s position in the fast-growing zero-emission transit market.
Ballard announced a commercial agreement to supply 500 FCmove®-HD+ fuel cell engines to New Flyer, a subsidiary of NFI Group and one of North America’s leading bus manufacturers. The order represents 50 megawatts of fuel cell capacity and marks the biggest deal between the companies since their partnership began more than a decade ago.
Deliveries will begin in 2026, powering New Flyer’s Xcelsior CHARGE FC™ hydrogen fuel cell buses operating across North America.
“We are proud that New Flyer continues to place their trust in Ballard as their long-term technology partner,” said Oben Uluc, Ballard’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Our fuel cell engines, backed by additional fleet services, deliver the range, rapid refueling, and reliable performance New Flyer’s fleets require.”
The deal reinforces Ballard’s role as a core technology supplier in the global shift toward clean public transit. Hydrogen fuel cell buses are increasingly seen as a viable zero-emission alternative to diesel fleets, particularly for long routes and cold-weather operations where battery-electric options can face limitations.
New Flyer has already deployed Ballard-powered buses across multiple jurisdictions in North America. The companies say those vehicles have demonstrated consistent performance across varied climates and route demands while serving as direct replacements for diesel models.
“This agreement is the next step in our long-standing partnership with Ballard and a key component in advancing our leading fuel cell bus offerings,” said David White, Executive Vice President of Supply Management at New Flyer. “With growing demand for fuel cell buses, we are excited to continue this partnership as we support the transition to zero-emission transportation.”
Ballard says its global installed base now exceeds 2,200 fuel cell buses, which have collectively logged more than 250 million kilometres. The company reports 98 percent fleet availability and zero safety incidents across deployments.
Beyond hardware, Ballard is expanding recurring service revenue through its Fleet Services platform, which includes training, technical support, parts supply, operational monitoring, digital analytics, and ongoing fuel cell stack servicing.
For British Columbia’s hydrogen and clean mobility ecosystem, the agreement signals continued commercial traction for homegrown climate technologies competing on a global stage.
