Genome BC Reopens GAPP Funding for Biotech Firms

March 29, 2026 by Bulletin Board Leave a Comment

Genome Canada’s flagship commercialization program is back, offering British Columbia companies a new opportunity to advance genomics-driven innovation.

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP), delivered locally through Genome BC, supports collaborations between Canadian for-profit companies and academic researchers to bring biotechnology innovations closer to market.

The sector-agnostic program is open to companies working across industries including health, agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, mining, and biomanufacturing, provided genomics plays a role in their technology or insights.

Two funding streams are available to B.C. applicants.

Genome BC is a member of the BC Tech Association.

BC Tech is the largest member-led technology non-profit in British Columbia, and we’re dedicated to turning startups and scaleups into the anchor companies of tomorrow. Our work supports members to grow and diversify their talent pool, acquire new customers, access capital and accelerate their scaleup journey. Technology is a key industry for BC’s future and builds resiliency in every industry. Today, every company is a tech company. Join now.

The National GAPP stream provides up to $2 million from Genome Canada, alongside up to $1 million from Genome BC, covering up to half of total project costs. Projects typically range from $900,000 to $6 million and are geared toward well-defined commercial opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Regional GAPP stream (BC-GAPP) supports earlier-stage projects, typically between $300,000 and over $1 million, with the goal of helping companies scale toward larger funding opportunities.

By pairing industry with academic expertise, GAPP aims to accelerate product development, reduce commercialization risk, and attract follow-on investment. The program also includes dedicated support for intellectual property protection for small businesses.

The latest intake follows a previous round that funded eight genomics-focused research projects across Canada.

Letters of Intent for the current call are due April 13, 2026.
