Rogers Adds Satellite Support for Outdoor Apps

April 1, 2026 by Techcouver Newsdesk Leave a Comment

Rogers is expanding its satellite-to-smartphone connectivity platform with new integrations aimed at improving coverage across British Columbia’s remote and outdoor-heavy regions.

The company announced that Rogers Satellite now supports Messenger and onX, enabling users to stay connected and navigate even in areas without traditional cell service. The update builds on existing support for apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather, and X.

The move is particularly relevant for B.C., where regions like the Sea-to-Sky corridor and Garibaldi Provincial Park—both identified by Rogers as high-usage areas—continue to see strong demand from hikers, backcountry travellers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

“Canadians should be able to stay connected no matter where their travels take them,” said Mark Kennedy, Chief Technology Officer at Rogers. “With Rogers Satellite now powering these apps, customers can stay on top of weather, find their way on remote highways and trails, and check in with family when they’re beyond the reach of traditional cell towers.”

By enabling satellite connectivity directly on smartphones, Rogers is positioning its network as a hybrid layer that extends beyond traditional infrastructure. Messenger allows users to send updates and maintain contact, while onX provides detailed mapping tools, including trail navigation, land ownership overlays, and offline weather forecasting with real-time data.

For British Columbia’s outdoor economy—spanning tourism, recreation, and resource industries—the ability to maintain connectivity in remote areas has both safety and operational implications.

Rogers Satellite also includes support for text-to-911, reinforcing its role as a critical communications tool in areas where conventional coverage remains inconsistent or unavailable.
