Microsoft is deepening its investment in carbon removal, signing a long-term offtake agreement for 626,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from a Canadian project led by Svante and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC).
The credits will be generated over 15 years from the North Star Carbon Solutions project in Saskatchewan, an Indigenous-led initiative that combines bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The project will be co-located at the MLTC Bioenergy Centre in Meadow Lake.
At full capacity, the facility is expected to capture up to 90,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with emissions permanently stored in a dedicated geologic site. The system is designed as a fully integrated “source-to-sink” carbon removal solution, supported by monitoring, reporting, and verification standards.
The project leverages waste biomass from local forestry operations, aligning with growing demand for scalable, durable carbon removal solutions among large technology companies.
Svante will fund development through to a final investment decision, with commercial operations targeted for early 2029.
Microsoft’s involvement signals continued momentum in the carbon removal market, as major tech players look to secure high-quality credits to meet long-term climate commitments while helping scale emerging infrastructure.
