For many trades contractors, the workday does not end when the crew leaves the job site.
Quotes still need to be prepared, schedules updated, invoices checked and customer reports written—often using information scattered across emails, text messages, accounting platforms and field-service software.
Vancouver startup Barry wants to take that administrative burden off the owner’s plate.
The company is building what it describes as an AI operations manager for trades and home-service businesses. Rather than replacing existing platforms, Barry connects tools such as Jobber, QuickBooks, Housecall Pro, Gmail and Google Calendar with conversations taking place through text, WhatsApp, Telegram or Slack.
That allows contractors and their crews to interact with Barry much like another member of the team.
An owner can ask for a daily report tracking revenue, overdue invoices or cancelled jobs, for example. Barry can also identify completed work that has not been invoiced, flag quotes that have gone quiet and turn job-site updates into paperwork.
In one customer workflow shared by the company, a contractor sent Barry a walkthrough video and asked it to prepare a quote. The platform extracted the relevant information, drafted several pricing options and created the corresponding customer and job in Jobber.
Another home-service operator uses Barry to convert crew videos and WhatsApp updates into reports for customers, removing the need for the owner to review every piece of footage personally.
The approach reflects a broader shift in how small businesses are adopting artificial intelligence. Instead of using a standalone chatbot to write an email or answer a question, operators are beginning to place AI inside recurring business processes.
For Barry, that means using information already generated by crews—texts, photographs, videos and voice notes—to update systems, prepare documents and surface potential problems. The company says employees do not need to download a new app or change how they communicate.
Barry is led by co-founder and CEO Griffin Velichko, who grew up around the construction industry and worked on job sites during high school, and co-founder and CTO Torrin Pataki, a Langley native with a background in machine learning and natural-language processing.
Both studied Business and Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and previously won a Google DeepMind-sponsored continual-learning hackathon in San Francisco.
The startup says it is building Barry alongside contractors and home-service operators, with current users spanning painting, cleaning, window washing, tree care and other field-service businesses.
“Every service pro we talk to already has ways of getting the job done, whether it’s documented in SOP’s or lives in the experience of their team,” Velichko told Techcouver.
“We’ve built Barry to seamlessly join their team and learn their unique processes. From there, we can help automate and tangibly improve their business quite quickly. You couldn’t get that same speed and flexibility by handing them another dashboard to figure out, and that’s what makes Barry so powerful here.”
The founders are also learning where operators draw the line on automation. While owners may be willing to automate reporting, scheduling and draft paperwork, consequential decisions can still require human review and approval.
For trades businesses that already have plenty of software but not enough time, Barry’s bet is that the next useful AI tool will not ask them to adopt another dashboard.
It will simply join the conversation and get to work.
