Photonic Proposes Ambitious $500M Semiconductor Facility in Canada

September 14, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas Leave a Comment

Photonic has unveiled intentions to establish a multi-tenant semiconductor manufacturing facility in Canada.

The Vancouver-based company has raised nearly $500 million in venture capital to develop commercial-scale quantum computers and quantum networks using its proprietary Entanglement First architecture.

Entanglement First architecture leverages a unique qubit modality of optically-linked silicon spin qubits to enable powerful computation.

Photonic’s “Project VANGUARD” has been selected for the Canada Investment Summit Prospectus, a portfolio of nationally significant investment opportunities presented to global institutional investors and allied governments.

VANGAURD is envisioned as “shared national semiconducting manufacturing infrastructure.”

The proposed facility would serve commercial and government organizations across quantum computing, artificial intelligence, aerospace, defence, and more.

Canada is home to world-class research and innovation in these fields, yet local companies often struggle to commercialize and scale.

Meanwhile, demand for advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity is rising.

At an estimated cost of up to $500M, Project VANGUARD “is an opportunity to build critical semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure that helps Canadian companies scale at home, strengthens our economic and technological sovereignty, and positions Canada as a trusted partner in the advanced technology supply chains that will define the future,” according to Photonic chief executive officer Don Mattrick.

The Project is expected to create skilled jobs related to engineering, advanced manufacturing, and technical operations roles.

The Canada Investment Summit in Toronto this week is hosted by Prime Minister Mark Carney in partnership with Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board.

Over the summer, Photonic strengthened its leadership team with the appointments of Orlagh Neary to Chief Marketing Officer and Briony Shipman to Vice President of Global Government Affairs.

Mattrick said the appointments reflect the company’s belief that market-building will be as important as technology development in quantum’s next phase.

Photonic now has more than 160 employees across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
