Vancouver-based TryCanadian.ca has launched a permanent collection of 98 Indigenous-owned, community/Nation-owned and Indigenous joint-owned businesses across Canada, with entries spanning software development, design, retail and other sectors.
Released ahead of today’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the collection is intended to help people discover Indigenous businesses throughout the year.
As Techcouver previously reported, TryCanadian helps users find Canadian alternatives to international brands, distinguishing between factors such as ownership, headquarters and manufacturing location.
The new collection includes Fredericton-based Sesgweg Software Solutions, an Indigenous-owned software development company founded by Christopher Dedam of Listuguj Mi’kmaq First Nation. Also featured is Nova Scotia’s Stevens Solutions & Design / 3D Wave Design, which provides 3D modelling, technical visualization and design services.
TryCanadian’s technology category also lists Sawano Pinesiwan, a Manitoba business providing Indigenous education and life-skills programming, founded by Ruth Murdock of Fisher River Cree Nation.
Closer to home, the collection includes Vancouver’s Salmon n’ Bannock and Sisters Sage, Squamish’s Sḵwálwen Botanicals and West Vancouver’s Talaysay Tours.
TryCanadian says it individually researches each business using company information, Indigenous business directories, government records and other sources. Its ownership review is not a third-party certification.
The platform describes the collection as a small, ongoing effort launched in recognition of September 30, a day to remember residential school Survivors, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities.
